Beyond the Pull of Gravity
Unreal Physics is a digital playground where the laws of physics are mere suggestions! With the Gravity Fields DLC, this sandbox becomes a cosmic circus, where gravity is a puppet master at your command! The question is, is Gravity Fields a stellar addition, or a cosmic catastrophe? Read on to find out!
A World Without Limits
Gravity Fields expands the base sandbox experience of Unreal Physics further still, allowing you to now, as the name suggests, have fun with gravity. Before the Gravity Fields DLC, Unreal Physics was still a decent physics-based sandbox experience, but the inability to manipulate gravity was always the proverbial elephant in the room. Until now.
Unless it isn’t already obvious, Unreal Physics: Gravity Fields is a simulation game through and through. There is no story of any description – it is purely a playground for physics enthusiasts to stretch their legs and imaginations alike in. As in the main game, the Gravity Fields DLC thrives on experimentation. It allows you to manipulate objects and the environment in ways that defy logic. Once again, there is no narrative whatsoever – just seemingly endless possibilities to be as creatively destructive and chaotic as you wish!
Bending the Rules of Gravity
At the heart of Gravity Fields is, unsurprisingly, the gravity field itself. You can implement several instances of said gravity field with several differing properties if you wish. They manifest as spherical forces which can be created, resized, and repositioned at will, allowing you to orchestrate gravity-defying spectacles using the available elements and/or environment around you.
This core mechanic serves as the foundation for a vast array of creative possibilities. Players can fine-tune gravity fields with various properties, such as strength, direction, and even polarity. This level of customisation allows for intricate control over objects and character movement.
By skillfully combining multiple gravity fields, players can create complex gravitational landscapes. This opens up opportunities for defying traditional physics, such as creating zero-gravity environments. The game encourages experimentation by providing a rich environment filled with interactive elements.
A Cosmic Canvas
Like the base game, Gravity Fields is absolutely stunning to look at. There is so much going on that you will almost struggle to take everything in at once, but in the best possible way. A single environment can feature several different surfaces simultaneously ranging from bland, rough, smooth, shiny, transparent, glass-like, fully-reflective and even (literally) on fire. That’s because there is so much to potentially play around with that the environments can be carved into pretty much whatever you desire! You can spawn an assortment of dozens animals at will – such as orcas (killer whales), alligators and chickens – whilst in a water world surrounded by mirrored block buildings before planting a gravity bomb nearby and watching the utter chaos as everything gets blasted out in every direction at once.
The soundtrack is also nicely varied, with a good range of pre-installed background songs to choose from which are categorised into genres. Depending on your mood, you can choose to have a nice relaxing time whilst toying with gravity or ramp things up by going heavy-metal-full-destruction-mode – it’s your choice!
Overall, everything about Gravity Fields looks great and sounds exactly as you would expect it to sound.
Infinite Possibilities
Given the number of options available to you, the replay value of Gravity Fields is immense. You could play dozens of times and have an utterly new experience each and every time. You could even choose the same level, the same music, even the same pawn characters, and still have a totally different experience each time. That’s because of the randomness factor. You are able to tweak things on such a granular level that every playthrough will be unique yet still fun.
Conclusion
Gravity Fields is a captivating expansion to Unreal Physics, offering a deep dive into the fascinating world of gravity manipulation. With an abundance of customisation options, players can experiment endlessly, creating unique and unpredictable interactions. While the open-ended nature of the simulator provides unparalleled freedom, the lack of clear tutorials can be frustrating for newcomers. Despite this, the game’s potential for endless entertainment is undeniable, making it a must-play for physics enthusiasts and those seeking a truly innovative gaming experience.
