Pong
This is the game that started it all, PONG machines were first introduced in 1972 and became an instant hit at local taverns. Where pinball machines had been the dominant force in electronic entertainment, this table-tennis themed game with its simplistic visuals belied some of the more complex physics involved in the programming.
The stick paddles were divided into multiple segments allowing the square ball to be returned at multiple angles depending on where contact was made on the paddle. The ball reacted realistically to each bounce along the boundaries, allowing players to more accurately read deflections, while also picking up speed with each return to add an extra level of challenge.
PONG set the stage for the rise of electronic entertainment and is one of the most recognized and imitated arcade game of all-time.
